Varicose veins are unsightly, painful and frustrating. While you may think that there’s little you can do to prevent or treat the veins from scrawling their way up and down your legs without treatments or surgery, there are actually several home remedies that you can put to good use.
Thankfully, there are some easy ways to keep from getting varicose veins. Some of the most basic tips include wearing compression stockings and making sure that you take good care of your health. Stay at a healthy weight, get plenty of exercise, avoid standing or sitting for long amounts of time and keep your legs elevated when at rest.
If you ever sustain a cut or scratch over one of your larger veins, there’s a chance that you’ll develop a superficial varicose vein. While smaller than regular varicose veins, superficial veins can lead to bleeding and bruising. There’s even a chance that you could develop a blood clot at the site of the injury.
In order to prevent the formation of superficial varicose veins, keep your leg elevated if it has been hit hard enough that a bruise could form. Ice the site of impact for at least two hours to reduce any bruising or bleeding that might take place under the skin. Whenever you scratch or cut the skin over a vein, elevate your leg and press a bandage to the cut for at least 15 minutes.
If the veins in your legs ever feel tender or firm, or show signs of swelling, you may have a superficial varicose vein that can cause blood clots. Keep your leg elevated and heated with a damp, warm, clean cloth. You can also use a heating pad on a low setting. Be sure to keep a cloth between your leg and the pad to prevent burning the skin.
Be Mindful of How You Sit
Paying attention to how you sit can also keep you from developing varicose veins. Sitting with your legs crossed can potentially slow the flow of blood to and from your legs. It’s also recommended to not sit in a chair that’s too deep for the length of your legs. Sitting down into a chair too deep will dig into the backs of your knees and compresses your blood vessels. If you can’t find a chair that fits you better, you can always adjust yourself and move forward until the pressure on the backs of your knees is gone.
Varicose veins do not have to plague your entire life. There are options for prevention and relief. By taking charge of your lifestyle and keeping yourself aware of the causes and easy fixes to varicose veins, your days of suffering could be over.
